WLSA CAN African Conference Tour 2024: A Catalyst for Global Educational Exchange

In October 2024, the World Leading Schools Association (WLSA) launched its second African Conference Tour with the College Admissions Network (CAN) event, designed to bridge the gap between African students and top US universities. The WLSA team visited four major cities across Southern Africa: Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, and Gaborone, hosted by leading schools such as the African Leadership Academy, Westville Boys’ High School, Wynberg Boys’ High School, and Maru-a-Pula School.

Led by Dr. Douglas L. Christiansen, Vice Provost for University Enrollment Affairs and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Vanderbilt University, as well as Chair of WLSA Council Board and CAN, alongside Dr. Jack Jia, WLSA’s Executive Director, the conference featured admissions experts from renowned US universities like Bowdoin College, Columbia University, Davidson College, Duke University, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and Vanderbilt University. Our event emphasized the important mission of CAN: to promote diversity and access, helping high-achieving, under-resourced students gain access to leading universities.

The conference highlighted the holistic admissions approach, where universities explained how they see applicants as future members of their community. Beyond academics, they emphasize the importance and relevance of personal qualities like leadership, social skills, and community involvement to assess how students might thrive and contribute over their four years on campus. Panelists also covered financial aid options and the role of technology, like ChatGPT, in simplifying applications—helping students understand how they’ll be valued as whole individuals within a vibrant campus community, expanding across both academics and extracurricular activities.

Moving on, our delegates offered an in-depth look at the US higher education landscape, with a focus on the unique characteristics of the different universities. The panel discussed the nuances of different types of higher education pathways available, including liberal arts colleges, research universities, public flagship universities, and specialized colleges. Attendees explored key factors like what life would be like on an American campus, how the admission process works, diversity at the campuses, hobbies on offer for students to explore, financial aid options and much more. We equipped students and educators with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about pursuing higher education abroad.

The conference was not just an academic exercise and a platform of useful education; it offered practical advice and ample networking opportunities. Students and their families gained valuable insights into US university admission procedures and financial aid options for international students through the open discussions facilitated by our CAN fairs. These conversations were helpful with making the application process more approachable for students, empowering them to take the first steps towards their academic and career goals.

Attendees also had the chance to connect directly with senior WLSA representatives, getting firsthand insights into our global programs and the unique opportunities WLSA has to offer, as well as building meaningful connections. It was a great way to learn more about what's available and make valuable connections!

“I feel privileged to be able to connect with universities from the other side of the world. The WLSA CAN event shows that our seemingly unattainable dreams are feasible. It showed me that we are a global village. It was a truly insurmountable experience.”
- Mawande Buthelezi, Student at Westville Boys’ High School

Participants had a great time at the conference, with lots of positive feedback about how impactful it was for everyone who joined. Marcellino Nyar, an educator from Westville Boy’s High School, noted, "The World Leading Schools Association’s College Admission Network Event was a significant platform for shaping the future of higher education admissions. It offered a wealth of valuable and inspiring information, resources, and connections for students, educators, and institutions alike." This sentiment was echoed by many, highlighting the event's success in fostering cross-cultural exchange and preparing students for the global stage.

“I loved the panel discussion as it was very informative and helped me to understand the US admissions system. It also aided me in recognizing the changes that need to take place within our school system.”
- Juanita Wilson, High School Educator at Wynberg Boys’

The 2024 WLSA CAN African Conference Tour was more than a conference; it was a catalyst for change, acting as a movement towards global learning and cultural exchange. It provided a wealth of information, resources, and connections for students, educators, and institutions alike. As technology continues to evolve, such events are crucial for ensuring that students worldwide have access to the tools and guidance necessary for future success in the global education landscape.

Our CAN Africa Tour was made possible by the dedication and collaboration of host schools, panel leaders, and all participants. Their contributions to the success of this event were invaluable, and the impact will be felt for years to come as students embark on their educational journeys abroad.
